A Foundation for Mindful Teaching

The Mindful Educator Foundations Program is a professional learning course that aligns to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, designed for teachers seeking a clear, evidence-informed understanding of mindfulness and its impact in education.

Total Duration: 3 hours

Structure: 3 × 60-minute modules

Mode: Online synchronous or face-to-face

Audience: Primary & Secondary teachers

Program Rationale

Teaching is an emotionally and cognitively demanding profession. This professional learning program supports teachers to develop mindful awareness and nervous-system regulation skills that enhance personal wellbeing, classroom presence, and responsive teaching practice. Through evidence-informed strategies and reflective activities, participants will build practical capacity to manage stress, reduce reactivity, and foster calm, focused learning environments.

Across three structured modules, educators explore what mindfulness is (and is not), how attention, stress and neuroplasticity affect learning and wellbeing, and practical, developmentally appropriate ways to embed mindful awareness in classrooms and individual student support.

MODULE 1 — The Science of Attention, the Nervous System, Stress & Neuroplasticity.

60 minutes

Module Focus

Building foundational understanding of stress, awareness, neuroplasticity, nervous system regulation and their impact on teaching practice.

Learning Intention

To support teachers to recognise how stress and nervous-system responses influence their professional wellbeing, attention, and classroom interactions.

Key Content

Contemporary challenges and pressures in teaching

Overview of the nervous system and stress response (accessible, non-technical)

Effects of chronic stress on:

attention and focus

emotional regulation

decision-making and relationships

Introduction to mindful awareness as a professional capability (attention + awareness)

Learning Activities

Guided awareness practices (2–3 minutes)

Individual reflection: recognising personal stress patterns in teaching contexts

Small-group or whole-group discussion of classroom scenarios

Explain how stress and nervous-system responses affect teaching practice

Identify personal stress and reactivity patterns in professional contexts.

MODULE 2 — Developing Mindful Awareness & Emotional Regulation in Practice

60 minutes

Strengthening self-awareness and emotional regulation to support responsive teaching.

To develop practical skills for recognising reactivity and responding with greater awareness and choice.

Attention, awareness, and automatic reactions in classrooms

The space between stimulus and response

Emotional regulation as a professional skill

Recognising common emotional triggers in teaching

Guided mindfulness-based practices for attention and regulation

Case study analysis (behavioural challenges, conflict, overload)

Reflection on moments of reactivity and choice

Outcome Alignment

Participants will be able to:

Recognise moments of reactivity in professional contexts and apply practical strategies to support emotional regulation and focus

MODULE 3 — Embedding Mindfulness in School Contexts: Classroom Presence, Teaching & Sustainable Practice

60 minutes

Applying mindful awareness to classroom presence, positive relationships, and focused learning environments.

Learning Intention

To support teachers to integrate mindful awareness into everyday teaching practice in ways that enhance classroom climate and long-term wellbeing.

Teacher presence and its impact on classroom climate

Mindful communication and listening

Supporting calm transitions and emotionally safe learning environments

Sustainable teaching practices and burnout prevention

Translating awareness into daily routines

Reflective discussion on classroom presence and practices

Identification of one or two practical strategies for implementation

Personal action planning for sustainable practice
